What Is Block Blast?

Block Blast is an addictive block placement puzzle played on an 8x8 grid. Drag available block shapes into empty cells, complete full horizontal rows or vertical columns to clear them, and plan moves in advance to trigger high-scoring combos before running out of space.

How to Play Block Blast

Drag one of three available block shapes onto an open section of the 8x8 board. Filling an entire row or column triggers a blast that clears those blocks and earns score points. Clearing lines on consecutive turns builds a Combo streak, which drastically increases your point multiplier. Once all three current shapes are placed, a fresh set is dealt. The puzzle continues until none of the remaining shapes can fit anywhere on the board.

Controls

  • Mouse / Touch: Click or tap and drag shapes from the bottom shelf onto the grid.
  • Release: Drop the shape into valid empty cells on the 8x8 board.
  • Note: Blocks cannot be rotated; placements depend strictly on available geometry.

Objectives

  1. Complete horizontal rows and vertical columns to clear space.
  2. Chain consecutive clears to trigger score-boosting combo multipliers.
  3. Preserve open areas for large shapes like 3x3 squares and 5x1 lines.
  4. Survive as many rounds as possible to achieve a new high score.

Gameplay Mechanics

Unlike falling-block puzzles, Block Blast gives you total control over the pace—pieces wait for deliberate placement without a timer. However, a neat placement that clears one line can easily leave isolated single-cell holes or box out large 3x3 blocks. High-level play is all about board management, foresight, and sustaining combos.

Tips & Strategies

  • Keep the center of the board relatively open—cluttering the center cuts off placement options for large shapes.
  • Always inspect all three offered shapes before placing the first one; planning the placement sequence prevents accidental dead ends.
  • Prioritize combo preservation: clearing even a single line each turn keeps your combo multiplier alive for massive point boosts.
  • Reserve a 3x3 area whenever possible to accommodate the large square block, which is the most common cause of sudden game overs.

FAQs

What causes game over in Block Blast?

The game ends when none of the three available shapes can fit into the remaining open spaces on the board. Planning placements before placing each piece is the best way to prevent sudden dead ends.

Can you rotate blocks in Block Blast?

No, blocks cannot be rotated in Block Blast. You must fit the given shapes into the grid in their fixed orientation, making spatial planning and reserving room essential.

How does the Combo multiplier work?

Clearing lines on consecutive turns triggers a combo multiplier. Each consecutive clear steps up the combo counter (e.g., Combo x2, x3, x4), awarding exponential bonus points.
